Win a $40 Gift Certificate + Free Wine Tasting at Mezes! (extended till 7/25)

Posted by - July 16, 2014 - Restaurants, San Francisco

Let me set the scene: It’s a typical Wednesday night in SF and I’m craving something delicious… something flavorful…& something visually appealing (#foodpics, duh).

But here’s the kicker: I don’t want to get all dolled up NOR do I want to go to some pretentious place that needed ressies 2 weeks ago.

Ain’t no body got time for that.

So having that “go-to” restaurant makes life 10x easier. You know, the one where you walk in and it almost feels like home. The one where you see familiar faces, the bartender knows your name and even remembers your FAV wine (<– major brownie points).

Mezes Kitchen and Wine Bar is my new Go-To.

It’s the perfect place to unwind with a glass of wine and settle down with some really.really.really good authentic Greek food (which is hard to come by in SF).

My BF and I sat at the bar where our appetizers and entrees were paired with a different type of wine (also depends on your personal taste). Our bartender Jimmy recommended a variety of whites to reds and helped us with our food pairings. You honestly can’t go wrong with anything at Mezes, but here’s what we had:

Zucchini Cakes ($9): These are made with feta, onions, herbs and are served with a side of tzatizi sauce. These were perfectly crisp on the outside, wasn’t soggy in the middle, and had barely any oil or grease. These are a DEF must try!

Saganaki ($10): Pan seared sheep cheese with oregano and lemon. The cheese by itself was on the saltier side, but with the wine…it was a perfect match (kinda like…oreos & milk…cookies & cream…you get the point). I wouldn’t order one without the other.

Wine: Envolve 12 Sauvignon Blanc
This was
a great pairing with the appetizers and was very refreshing to the palate. The wine is from Sonoma, and had a hint of orange zest and grapefruit.  Nice minerality and an uplifting clean finish. This was probably one of my favorites of the night It’s a featured Happy Hour wine so you can drink even more of it everyday between 530-7pm.

Side: The winemaker is former Bachelor star, Ben Flajnik who is not only a dreamboat but an excellent wine maker.

Greek Salad ($10): I ALWAYS get Greek salad. At Mezes, it’s simple and lovely with high quality feta cheese, huge chunks of tomatoes, fresh cucumbers, and plenty of olives and onions. Also had just the right amount of dressing.

Pan seared prawns ($12): The prawns were sauced with tomatoes & onions and topped with feta cheese. It had a hint of citrus, but was also very sweet. It went really well with the Atlantis wine pairing.

Wine: Atlantis 13′ from Santorini, GR. The mythlogical island brings us this wine with crisp volcanic  minerals, juicy citrus and Mediterranean sea salt.

Grilled Lamb Chops ($25): I order mine medium rare plus and it always comes out perfect. These lamb chops are topped on a bed of wild rice and are seasoned with salt, pepper, oregano and lemon- and comes out smokin hot!

Wine: Fotinos ’09  from our very own Napa Valley region. This Greek American family grows their own grapes to produce this limited edition Pinot Noir (150 cases +/-).  Earthy flavors with stewed fruits,  dried cherries, and California nuts.  Went really well with the lamp chops.

A sip of wine + a bite of lamb chops = heaven.

Roasted lamb shank ($20): Had a different flavor than the lamb chops, and was also more tender. The meat practically melts and is soooo very delicious.

Wine: The Offering is a rhone blend from Santa Barbara, CA.

It has a long, smooth, complex finish to complement both the lamb shank and lamb chops. You get a taste of mixed dark berries, chocolate and black pepper.

Side:  This wine is known for their super cool labels and names of all of the wines.  Check out their website HERE.

So if you are looking to unwind after a long day at work, looking for authentic Greek cuisine or looking for a chill date night spot, Mezes is for you.

The mouth watering Pan Seared Prawns…of course!!! They are simply irresistible!! And always fresh to order. Made with a succulent citrus white wine sauce, topped with fresh tomatoes, a hint of sweet tasting onions and sprinkled feta cheese! Viola!! Perfection!! One couldn’t ask for anything more!

PAITHAKIA. Lamb is seriously the best, Especially when the lamb chops aren’t “gamey” and PERFECTLY seasoned.
