Oh boy am I excited to introduce SHINMAI to you guys.
They’re a brand new spot that just opened up in Uptown Oakland.
Branndddd new as in…. JUST opened up last week.
The concept is unique and is exactly what Oakland needed- something swanky, something young, something different.
While the food is inspired by Japanese culture and the traditions of an izakaya restaurant, Shinmai adds its very own Norcal/Oakland twist.
As most of you know, I’m a very
picky particular eater.
I like my drinks a certain way, my sushi a certain way (light rice, no wasabi), my burgers a certain way (extra-toasted buns, cut in half).
And when it comes to Japanese food— that’s like my FAV cuisine ever? Especially after spending a month in Japan earlier this year, I’ve come back a bit of a sushi/ramen snob.
In full disclosure- Shinmai is a client of mine. And if I didn’t like their food…. UHM.. It would have been a REAL awkward conversation.
So verdict?? Let’s just say that if I lived in Oakland I’d be here 3-4 times a week.
For the drinks, for the ambiance, for the FOOD.
The chef is @Jerroddoss, who comes from a very fine-dining background of restaurants: The French Laundry, Chez TJ, and Aziza.
Needless to say, he absolutely kills it in the kitchen.
Some must trys on the menu:
This compressed watermelon is one of the most REFRESHING and unique dishes I’ve ever had.
These are Berkshire Ribs in the making.
The ribs are cooked sous vide for TWELVE hours. Then removed from the water bath and brushed with a miso barbecue sauce. They torch it for caramelization and dust it with a mixture of bonito flakes, dried shrimp, and served with a tangy side of savoy cabbage, fresh horseradish root, cilantro, and lime.
Okay. That was a mouthful.
Just order it and thank me later.
This tonkotsu ramen is made with chasu egg, wood ear mushrooms, onion, negs, and bamboo. Another must try on the menu.
So to sum it all up– if you guys want to try the hottest spot in Oakland right now… go to Shinmai.
They’ve got a great starting menu and will be introducing new dishes weekly. Plus, they have a full bar and play great music… AKA perfect for a girls/boys night out!
