Most rated restaurant in New York City: Ippudo Ramen

Posted by - June 17, 2014 - New York, Restaurants

We’re pacing ourselves with these bowls of ramen and trying hard not to binge slurp all the noodles at once. It’s nearly impossible and I can barely stand it.

We even came here 2/3 days on our quick trip to New York.

Yes, it was THAT good. Let me explain why:

Ippudo ramen is, simply put, the best ramen I’ve ever had.

The noodles are  perfectly cooked al dente (made in-house).

The broth is super rich in flavor with a meaty and even slightly nutty taste.

And this egg…it’s like three times as delicious when you break the yolk and mix it all into your broth…LOVE.

Ramen

They have six different types of ramen, but I like this one the best:

Akamaru Modern ($14): the original silky “Tonkotsu” (pork) soup noodles topped with Ippudo’s secret “Umami Dama” miso paste, pork chashu, cabbage, sesame kikurage mushrooms, scallions, and fragrant garlic oil. (you gotta add the egg!)

The “Umami Dama” miso paste melts into the broth, creating a sweet and flavorful note across the entire bowl that had us slurping down our noodles.

And then these shishito peppers ($8)… Ridiculoulsy good & excellent with the yuzu salt.

Peppers

Hirata buns ($9): It was alright, (but I had much better ones down the street at BaoHaus). I’d recommend getting them anyways just to try it out! It comes with 2 slices of pork (or chicken) and the bun was perfectly soft. The pork doesn’t melt in your mouth like at BaoHaus, but the meat was tender enough. I’m still not fond of mayo in my pork buns, but it’s otherwise quite good.

Now onto the crazy wait time…which can easily be a 2 hr wait if you go during peak hours. Except when you’re in New York, I feel like every hour is a peak hour. I’d recommend going either really early or really late to avoid lines (which is what we did both times).

Side: They don’t take phone reservations, but they let you make a same day reservation in person. Just stop by in the afternoon and let the host or hostess know that you’d like to make a reservation for that evening.

But don’t worry, if you do get a ridiculous wait…they have a bar to help you kill time and ease the pain of waiting for those delicious bowls of ramen.

Sake

To sum it all up, Ippudo Ramen has become my FAV ramen spot in the U.S.  I just can’t get over how much I love this place and have been HOOKED ever since. {I’m praying, wishing, dreaming they would open one up in San Francisco.}

My go-to ramen spot in NY! I also wish there was one closer to me.

As for my favorite ramen spot in NY, I think Ippudo and Totto ramen come in at a close tie. I think the wait at Ippudo is better tho, because they actually have seats and a wait area. Where as, at Totto you’ll be waiting in the crazy heat/ or crazy cold outside.
